Title: Confessions of a Corn Kid

Author: Marcy Blesy (cover art by Amy Kuhl Cox)

Book Blurb:

Twelve-year-old Bernie Taylor doesn’t fit in. She wants to be an actress but not your typical country-music lovin’, beef-eatin’ actress you’d expect from Cornville, Illinois. No way. She wants to go to Chicago to be a real actress, just like her mom did before she died of breast cancer. Bernie keeps a journal that her Mom gave her and writes down all her confessions, the deepest feelings of her heart, ’cause she doesn’t want any of those regrets Mom talked about. Regrets sound too much like those bubbly blisters she keeps getting on her feet from trying to fit into last year’s designer knock-off shoes. But it’s not easy for Bernie to pursue her dreams. Her dad just doesn’t understand. Plus, she’s tired of being bullied for being different. Why can’t middle schoolers wear runway fashions to school?
_
Then, during the announcement of the sixth grade play, Bernie’s teacher reveals that there will be one scholarship to a prestigious performing arts camp in Chicago. Bernie knows it’s her one big chance to achieve her dream. She spends too much time dreaming of the lead role in the play (which includes kissing Cameron Edmunds) and not enough time practicing her audition lines. She bumbles her lines, blows her audition, and battles her bully, Dixie Moxley, reigning Jr. Miss Corn Harvest Queen. She digs in with the heels of her hand-me-down knee-high boots, determined to win that scholarship-somehow. If she doesn’t, she’ll be stuck in Cornville forever, far away from the spotlight she craves.

Dad, Father, Husband: What Father’s Day Means to Me

My Father Don and my son

My husband and children

My father-in-law and I

My Dad and I

Today I am re-blogging my feelings about Father’s Day to the men in my life.  (from last year)

Happy Father’s Day…If you recall when I wrote about Mother’s Day in May, I described my feelings on the day as “fractured,” as my mother died over a decade ago and it doesn’t seem like a complete holiday to me.  I don’t, however, feel the same way about Father’s Day.  Maybe because my Dad has been gone since I was 13, and maybe because, though I no longer had my Dad,  I had a father.  No, I’m not talking in a Biblical sense, though I believe that as well.

My parents divorced when I was 8, and strangely enough, when my Dad had his accident when I was 13, my Mom was one week away from marrying again, to my step-dad.  They postponed the wedding until after the funeral, and life continued.  My Dad was gone, and a new man lived in our home.  Don.  I hate the word “step-dad,” because Don who has been in my life much longer than my Dad is so much more to me than a “step-dad.”  Loving us, accepting us, being with us when Mom died, Don is my father.  No “step” in my mind.  I struggled with disrespecting my Dad, though, so I have resolved the issue in my own head by honoring my Dad as “Dad” and Don as “Father.”  I am blessed to have Don in my life, and today I want to wish him Happy Father’s Day publicly and let him know how much I appreciate him sticking with us through thick and thin.  I think maybe Dad would thank you, too.

And I would be remiss if I did not wish Happy Father’s Day to my father-in-law Harry.  He has been an ever-present presence in our family.  I look to him for advice and guidance and am honored to have him be an important part in the lives of our children.

And to my husband:  Thank you for epitomizing everything a Dad should be and can be.  You are patient, loving, kind, thoughtful, funny, and devoted.  I am proud to raise our children with you.  Happy Father’s Day.  I love you.

Dad, Don, Harry, and Ed, may the day fill you with joy, peace, and love.  I love you.  Happy Father’s Day!  :-)

Title: Finn’s Ship

Author: Serena Schreiber

Book Blurb:

Finn has never been on a cruise ship before, much less stowed away on one. He’s never impersonated a fairy tale character, sought lost treasure or gotten to know his real dad. Annual visits to family in Germany are normally highlighted by skateboarding, playing soccer with cousins, and getting spoiled by his grandparents.

 -

But all that is about to change when a mysterious foreigner hands Finn his father’s diary. He and best friend Burrito embark on the pursuit of his previously unknown inheritance — a fortune in Nazi Gold.
